TIME

SYNOPSIS

The journey of Arion, an ancient musician in the form of a dolphin, who travels back to his roots, summoned by the sound of his lyre, in order to revive his dolphin friends and his own forgotten identity.

PREMISE

The melody of a forgotten ancient lyre sounds at the bottom of the ocean as a fish swims accidentally close to the instrument. After a while, we can see a dolphin swimming in the distance as it travels through the ocean in order to reach the source of the sound. We can see it as it enters the underwater ruins of the ancient palace of Knossos. We can sense that this place seems familiar to the dolphin and also that his appearance looks pretty much alike to the drawings of the dolphins on the walls of the abandoned palace. As the dolphin reaches the ancient lyre, he touches the chords in order to produce more sound. After listening to this sound all the dolphins that were painted on the walls of the palace, come alive as colourful illusions of the past and swim towards the dolphin. As they dance together, our dolphin transfroms to a human, who is no other than Arion the ancient musician. Arion gets on the back of one of his friend dolphins, retrieve his lyre and starts to play music for his old friends as he continues to swim with them.

The general style of the film is based on the style of the paintings that exist in minoan frescoes and pottery of the ancient palace of Knossos, in Crete, Greece. The minoan art is full of symbols and wonderful designs of nature and also Minoans were the first civilization to depict dolphins in their drawings. The painting that this story is inspired from, is the "Fresco of the dolphins", that was made around 1600BC and exists in ruins of Knossos Palace. This painting depicts dolphins swimming together.

This project is a 3d animation project, but the final style is a cartoon look, 2d shaded 3d film, that does not look at all like 3d. Concept art was made with great care, in order for the film to look as much 2d as possible with great attenton to detail, style and atmosphere. In this film, 2d animation and 3d animation are merged together, as all the effects of the water are 2d animated.

This project is part of an MA in 3d Computer Animation at Bournemouth University.

SYNOPSIS

Ora, in the past was a young ballerina, who had a very weird relationship with time.
For her, the big clock that she was staring everyday, was the ruler not only of her dance, but of her life as well. Only when the clock stops, does she realize that clocks cannot define time, we are.

PREMISE

Ora, our main character, in the past was a pretty and talented ballet dancer, who used to work very hard in order to achieve her goal and be a great dancer. But the harder she was working, the more anxious she was becoming about time. For her, who wanted to do so many things, time was always so little and never enough. So, for her, TIME was the one to blame if things didn’t happen as she had planned. Every day for Ora was pretty much the same. The same routine over and over again, faster and faster, the same steps that seemed to go nowhere, the same clock on the theatre’s wall rulling her whole life.

One day, as she was doing her everyday routine in the thatre, the clock breaks. Ora, looks at the pieces of the broken clock completely shocked. This clock was really the first thing that she  always hated, but she felt that she was always depended on it, and now she couldn’t continue her practice without it. Desperate as she was, crying above the clock’s pieces, one gear of the clock becomes alive and suddenly without realizing, Ora becomes wooden and  is transfered into the world of time. Ora feels the appearance of something behind her. She turns to look full of fear. She sees the enormous metalic hands of  TIME just above her.She starts to run faster and faster in order to find a way to escape. She falls. Ropes appear in her hands and feet. Time controls her completely. Now she is the puppet of time. She tries to look again at TIME s face, .She sees nothing else but herself controlling the ropes. She is socked. She cannot believe that all that time, she was the one to blame. It was not time’s fault. She was the one who created all that stress and anxiety in her mind, she was the one that was always defining time. Shocked as she is, she makes her final big effort to escape by trying to cut the ropes with her teeth. She wakes up.

Now, Ora is an old lady, living alone in a big city. But she never forgets that day. The day that she realized her mistake. The day that she found out she is the one who defines time.So she wakes up everyday smiling and knowing that although she has no much time left, she is happy about the way she lives each moment of her life everyday. Without clocks. Without further restrictions. No matter how the rest of the world outside her room choose to live, in her room and in her heart she is the one that defines how she wants to live.

THE PUPPET OF TIME

Illustration project / Markers on paper (2013)

story: Elpida Panourgia
illustration: Elpida Panourgia

This is an illustration project that I did based on the main idea of my second animation
project “TIME”. I wanted to give a dramatic feeling to this project, as Ora, my wooden character, in the story  is chased by the monster of TIME. So, I gave much emphasis in the expressions and poses of my character, the perspective, the play between light and shadow, and a big emphasis in the white space, which is very important in order to show all the drama that my character goes through.

THE BALLERINA

Illustration project / Markers on paper (2013)
story: Elpida Panourgia
illustration: Elpida Panourgia

This is the second illustration project that I did based on the main idea of my second animation project “TIME”. In this project I tried to observe, study and illustrate a young ballerina’s dance. Those Illustrations were very helpful to me, in order to capture the overall mood of the animation project that came after. In this project I also tried to incomporate some of the animation’s backrounds in order to experiment with colours, tones and scales that would make me get close to the animation’s final result.

SOMETHING IS MISSING

Comic book illustration / Ink and white pastel on paper (2010)

story: Elpida Panourgia
illustration: Elpida Panourgia

“Something is missing” is an illustration project for a comic book that I created in 2010.
Through the overall meaning of the story I wanted to convey the feelings of madness and despair and the thoughts of a person who no one believes in him and his work and how this can lead him to do things that he couldn’t imagine and change him as a person forever.
Because no matter how great our goals in life are, we can never forget that we cannot only strive to be great artists, but also great and good people in our lives.
This is my first comic book, and this is very important to me, so I wanted to share with the people a personal story of mine.

SYNOPSIS
Billy, a child like any other, lives in a big city and plays alone in a yard between four walls, because he has no one to play with. So, he comes up with the idea of making a little doll to be his teammate... a friend just the way he imagines and wants him to be. But, there is no true friendship without love, based only on need. Therefore, only when Billy draws a heart on his inanimate friend, does he come alive and they finally play together.

PREMISE

Our story begins with our main character, Billy, as he plays football all alone in the yard between four walls, in a neighborhood of a big city. We listen the echo of the sound that the ball makes as it falls with power upon the wall again and again, while our main hero plays alone kicking a ball on a wall in which he has drawn the figure of a small boy. The need of companionship in the boy's game is obvious. That is why he plays with the "image" of the small boy on the wall. But this fact does not satisfy him. He wants a "real" teammate to play with. Someone who can touch and feel. Sad and tired as he is, he sits in the corner of the small yard, when suddenly he comes up with a great idea. He will make a teammate for himself in order to have someone "real" to play with. Filled with enthusiasm, he runs to his room and starts to make his new friend. Many hours have passed and he feels exhausted but extremely happy because now he holds in his hands his new teammate. Immediately Billy goes down the stairs and put his new friend towards the goal in order to play with him. He takes a distance from the goal, he runs and shoots. When the ball reaches the small toy, this falls lifeless to the ground. Now Billy is really upset. All his efforts in order to have someone to play with, have failed. When the night falls, he goes to his room again, holding his handmade friend in his hands. Before Billy puts his friend aside in order to sleep, he takes out of his pocket a colored crayon and draws a heart in the chest of his inanimate teammate, wishing he was real, and falls in his bed in order to sleep. But, during the night Billy wakes up suddenly and to his surprise, he sees that his new friend has gone. Full of anxiety he tries to search for him and goes down the stairs in order to reach the yard. When he arrives to the yard, a ball comes to his feet. Billy looks up. H sees his handmade friend waving his hand and calling him in order to play together. Billy cannot believe his eyes. Now he is extremely happy. He finally has a real teammate.

THE LITTLE WITCH AND THE ENCHANTED RIDER

Children’s book illustration / coloured ink and pencils (2009)
Story: Katerina Martimianaki
Illustration: Elpida Panourgia

Unpublished work

_Official selection in children’s book competition in Katowice, Poland, 2010

_Shown in the children’s book exhibition in Expo, Athens, 2010

This is an illustrated book for children that my friend Katerina and I always wanted to make. The story is about the relationship between man and woman. With a nice way we wanted to give to the children an explanation about what happens to a relationship when fear and doupt comes inside the hearts and minds of people, and how life and timing can sometimes be very difficult, but that doesn’t mean that people will stop to love and respect each other, even after they take their separate ways in life.

84 HAIKU POEMS

Poetry Illustration / Aquarelle colors and aquarelle colored pencils (2011)

Illustration: Elpida Panourgia
Poets / Writers: Buson Taniguchi, Kikaku Takarai, Onitsura Uejima,
Shiki Masaoka, Isha, Basho.
Translation in Greek: Roumpi Theofanopoulou, Elpida Panourgia

In this project, a big effort has been made in order to get the Greek audience be familiar with the Japanese poetry of haiku, poems with special nature, stracture and meaning and philosophy. Those poems introduce the audience to a very different way of thinking and perceiving reality and for that reason many people who are accustomed to the modern culture, do not choose to read them or they do not know them.
All the illustrations in this project are made with colours and clear abstract forms, with emphasis in the composition and shapes, in order to reflect and depict the meaning of the haiku poems, their simple philosophy about life and attract the interest of the greek readers of all ages.
